Andrew Callard (Director and Math Instructor)

 Andrew taught middle schoolers math and coached the Math Counts team at Sidwell Friends for 23 years.  In his position as middle school math department chair over 16 years, he wrote enrichment curricula for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, respectively, to ensure that the most talented students in each grade are adequately challenged and stimulated in their math classes.  He won the Sidwell Friend's Alice Dater prize, awarded to honor outstanding teaching from a faculty member in 2011. and the Goldberg Award given to an exceptional young faculty member in 2000.  He has coached his team to first place at the State MathCounts Competition for DC public and private middle schools in 2001, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019. He has tutored dozens of students in grades 5-12 in math, physics and SAT test prep since 2001. In addition to being a lover of puzzles and challenging math problems, he is a singer and composer who has recorded with numerous professional musicians all over the world.  He holds a B.A. from Brown University and M.A in Math Education from the University of Maryland.
